The new extension at Trinity Fields School and Resource Centre is now supporting up to 80 more pupils with special educational and the most profound and complex needs to receive an education that will provide them with the best possible start.
The design of the extension provides over 2,000m2 of additional space over two storeys, including a welcoming reception area, flexible learning areas with access to covered external space, soft playrooms, staff areas and community facilities. The new extension addresses the growing demand for SEN places and the evolving needs of Caerphilly’s pupils.

The need to expand Trinity Fields forms part of the wider Sustainable Communities for Learning Band B Programme and Caerphilly County Borough Council’s commitment to its school investment programme jointly funded by the Welsh Government and Local Authority.
The design was developed following thorough analysis of the constraints and opportunities of the site and in close collaboration with the school, parents, pupils and wider stakeholders to understand their needs and aspirations making sure that the layout and design for the building is resilient, accessible and future proof.

The new extension links to the main building to create a cohesive and inclusive environment and a sense of connection that enhances accessibility throughout the school. A new canopy provides shelter and a welcoming environment between the vehicle drop-off area and the main entrance.
Outside, the forest garden offers a transformative experience for SEN pupils, providing additional educational resources and opportunities to learn about nature and the environment while supporting well-being. Landscaped areas extend from the forest garden, encouraging biodiversity through grassland, shrubs, ferns, wildflowers, trees, and bat and bird boxes. The landscape embraces outside learning and provides a sustainable and stimulating setting.

The extension achieves a BREEAM Excellent rating, ensuring that it meets the growing demand for school places and anticipates the needs of the future, creating an enduring, environmentally conscious space for learning and community connection.
