Rio Architects’ appointment to the Aberthaw scheme marks major milestone for the region’s landmark regeneration project

Rio Architects has been appointed by CCR Energy to develop a masterplan and submit an outline planning application for the former Aberthaw Power Station site, paving the way to transform one of South Wales’ most recognisable industrial landmarks into a dynamic hub for innovation and economic growth.
We’re pleased to partner with CCR Energy, which is leading the development of the c. 500-acre site in Aberthaw, situated between Cardiff International Airport and Bro Tathan Airfield and Business Park. We are part of a strong local team, alongside Lichfields Planning Consultants and Churchill Thornhill Finch, building on our previous collaboration on the Central Quay Masterplan.
Recognising the site’s development potential for sustainable, clean economic growth in South-East Wales, CCR Energy aims to remediate, redevelop and reposition the site for renewable energy, technology, innovation and community to work side by side to achieve a dynamic, sustainable environment. The potential for this development to have a positive impact and drive lasting change for the future of Wales is considerable.
The site contains significant remnants of its industrial past which present a range of constraints and challenges; however, these also bring enormous opportunities for sustainable, low-carbon, innovative development.
We are working with CCR Energy on the next milestone in its journey to develop a masterplan, help capture its vision for Wales, and support a pathway towards a new low-carbon future.
The development has the potential to generate high-value jobs, attract investment, provide educational opportunities, and inspire ongoing innovation in new technology, advanced research facilities and development space in a unique and picturesque location along the Welsh Coast Path.
We look forward to developing the proposals for the site and involving the local community in shaping the masterplan.
