One Team. One Race.
The sculpture
Placed in Landsea Gardens, a prominent area in Cardiff Bay, the Codebreakers’ statue is a focal point for locals and visitors commemorating three legendary Welsh rugby league players—Billy Boston, Clive Sullivan, and Gus Risman—chosen by public vote from a group of 13 athletes, all of whom grew up within a three-mile radius of Cardiff Bay. It celebrates the strong cultural roots of rugby in Cardiff. It stands as a powerful symbol of diversity, inclusion, and the area’s rich history.

Bringing it to life
One Team. One Race. was launched on Sporting Heritage Day 2020 and led by community leaders from Butetown, the wider Cardiff Bay community and representatives from the public and private sectors.
We worked with Cardiff Council, providing design advice for the plinth that supports this powerful bronze statue created by renowned sculptor Steve Winterburn. To ensure precision, we even constructed a 1:1 full-scale cardboard model of the plinth, which occupied quite a significant space in our studio.
The plinth needed to be more than just a base; it had to complement the statue’s significance and contribute to the narrative of pride, resilience, and community the project embodies.
We also attended a charity event alongside rugby and sports personalities, their families, the community and project sponsors to raise funds and awareness of this fantastic legacy project.
The visibility and recognition garnered by this project have not only celebrated the lives of the rugby legends but also showcased our contribution to culturally significant public works.
