Newport Digital Hub provides commercial office space that will utilise and reconfigure the existing five-storey building. With Newport Train Station in close proximity, the level access building approach via Mill Street rises up to the entrance podium. Within the reception space are lounge, plant and storage areas together with lift access to take you to the upper floors. These floors house workspace areas in an open-plan arrangement with toilet core facilities on each level.

Newport has a rich maritime history associated with the dockland area of the city that dates back to the 1840s when the Town Dock was first opened. Whilst shipping containers have become synonymous with the modern-day docks, they have also been successfully utilised within buildings. The building aspires to provide an unregimented, dynamic and vibrant working environment. The use of shipping containers on the development provides the device to achieve this whilst acknowledging Newport Docks.   

The façade design proposals will create an open and contemporary environment with high levels of natural light. The introduction of coloured shipping container pods will create a dynamic intervention into these spaces. This is further enhanced with the introduction of a metal mesh cladding system that conceals the existing facade. Pockets of this mesh are removed in certain areas to reveal a layer of crisp curtain walling detailing behind. The mesh provides solar screening to the southern façade where floor to ceiling glazing provides an excellent working environment.

The base to the office has a new glazed entrance area that is recessed from the upper façade whilst featuring a digital screen that looks onto the raised podium area. Elegant proportions, high-quality materials and crisp detailing have been combined to create a contemporary and well-mannered aesthetic, whilst providing a light and spacious working and living environment.
