The staff at Care for the Family were recently welcomed into their new home at Cleppa Park, Newport, where staff can enjoy a new office environment that reflects their brand values and influences collaborative working across all departments.

Rio was appointed by Care for the family to analyse, question and translate the client's brief into an office design that staff would be proud of and demonstrated the charities core values to visitors. By challenging the brief and rigorous spatial planning, Rio was able to create an office design that suited the domestic, non-clinical design the client aspired to have.

The interior was influenced by domestic aesthetics through the introduction of tweed effect carpet flooring, calming wall colours and touches of wood to desktops, all creating a soft and familiar working environment. The focus of the office space is the central kitchen/breakout area, created to take staff away from their working environment into a space for socialising, reflection and well-being. The open plan office differs from the rabbit warrens of Garth House where staff were isolated in teams across the building. The office space allows and encourages staff to collaborate at various points, either in meeting pods, the informal hot desking table or various meeting rooms scattered across the perimeter.

The visitor side of the building is a continuation of the domestic, calm interior of the staff office, incorporating calming colours, softwood textures and focal lighting. The focus of the visitor side is the large entrance foyer and multi-use hall which are equipped to hold up to 200 visitors for events, networking and training. To maximise the potential of the entrance foyer, the space can be opened up to the adjacent training room via the sliding wall, which suits events but also an expansion of breakout space from the training room into the foyer on training days.

The focus of the project in line with budgets was to re-use as much of the existing fit-out in Tovey House as possible. Rio worked closely with the client, quantity surveyors and contractors to re-use as much of the existing carpet tile flooring, timber doors, sanitary ware and services as possible without compromising on design aesthetic and aspirations of the brief. It has been a pleasure working with Care for the Family, RPA, Beacon Business Interior Group, Hunter Acoustics & McCann & Partners on this great new office in Newport.

Rio looks forward to visiting Care for the Family again in the coming months to see how they’ve settled in.
